Another good site to read through below

All our kennel dogs are fed as much fresh food as is possible, though we do use dried kibble when we must, their main diet is fresh meat, minced or whole with bones raw, we add to that fresh veggies which are put through a garden mulcher (great for those with quite a few dogs)
They also get cooked liver, chicken, and the occasional bit of fish, pregnant or feeding bitches get extra calcium but not pups, a good diet is all that a growing pup needs, do NOT feed extra calcium.
Most litters are also bottle fed, not only to ensure they are getting enough food but also to ensure an early bonding with people.

Do not rely too much on information about diet from most vets, they may be pushing some brand of prepared food or may simply not have studied what is realy good for dogs.
Just as a doctor is not a dietician nor are most vets up with diets for dogs, nor do they always know what is best for a particular breed.
When in doubt about any procedure, not only diet, contact your breeder first.
